PMP PMBOK 8 – Weak Stakeholder Engagement.

Hello Everyone. My name is Darron Clark, your PMP Instructor. My mission is to promote the good news of traditional project management — including AI, Engineering, Agile, Hybrid, and Waterfall — and how each one impacts you as a Project Manager.

Today’s topic is one of the most frustrating realities in project delivery: Weak Stakeholder Engagement.

Stakeholders often want influence without involvement. They want decision‑making authority, but not the responsibility that comes with consistent participation. Sponsors disappear until something goes wrong, and SMEs are stretched thin across multiple initiatives, making timely input nearly impossible. PMs are left navigating political tension, trying to escalate issues without damaging relationships or appearing confrontational.

This creates a dangerous dynamic: stakeholders want control but not accountability. Projects slow down because decisions stall. Risks grow because information is incomplete. And PMs absorb the blame for delays caused by missing stakeholder engagement.

The deeper truth is that weak engagement isn’t a communication problem — it’s a priority problem. When stakeholders don’t invest time, projects lose clarity, alignment, and momentum. Strong PMs must set expectations early, define engagement responsibilities, and escalate with transparency, not emotion.
